EPSY5016: Special Education Foundations - Advancing Equity and Inclusive Practices

This course is designed to provide students with information on (a) historical foundations and due process in special education; (b) ability, intersectionality, and equity in special education; and (c) universal design for learning, multi-tiered systems of support, and equity-oriented pedagogy. Through this course, the historical foundations of special education will be laid out for students, including the legislation and litigation that have led to current policy and practice. Then, students will examine current theories and issues surrounding the concepts of ability, intersectionality, and equity in special education. Finally, students will learn how to enact culturally sustainable and equitable teaching practices through universal design for learning and multi-tiered systems of support.
